Atheism: Misconceptions and

Miscontructions

The lecture will concentrate on typical

misrepresentations of atheism and atheist

thought in both academic and lay circles,

going as well into atheists’ perception of

 themselves. Atheism has been

misrepresented in academic circles long

enough; essays, books and journals that

try to represent it as ‘deviance’ from the

norm are more than plentiful.

The lecture

will tackle some of the common

misperceptions of atheism that the

lecturer found during his research on

atheism in Europe.

The lecturer is a REVACERN researcher
(Religions and Values in Central and Eastern Europe, funded by the European Commission), teaches history of atheism at the Palacky University in Olomouc,

Czech Republic. He also authors an almost year-long column about European religionsin the Belgrade daily Danas

(Serbia) and the founder and editor-in-

chief of the online academic journal

Humanicus.
